About Us

In 1976, the Comfort Senior Citizens Organization was born. Comfort residents came together due to efforts of an enthusiastic group of folks: Jack and Eoiline Bowie; Comfort's Poet Laureate, Ilse McElroy, and humanitarians, Harris & Dede Finney. These folks wanted the best for Comfort's senior residents.  Their focus was on community action and partnership.  The Comfort Senior Citizens group's goals were two-fold: to assist the elderly and to make Comfort an even better place to live.  Within six years, their efforts resulted in an all-around program of fellowship to nutrition and health.

The Comfort Senior Citizens group joined the Chamber of Commerce and became a central organization as an advocate for the elderly. They provided medical screening clinics for everyone in the community and set up a nutrition center in the Methodist Church Educational Building.

The Comfort Golden Age Center (est October 1987) is now a 501(c)(3) organization under the Comfort Golden Age Center Foundation serving the Northern part of Kendall County, including Waring, Welfare, Comfort to the borders of Kerr and Gillespie Counties.  We serve about 270 seniors per year through over 20 different programs and activities at our center, including a medical loan closet, food pantry/pet food pantry, comfort supplies (heaters, blankets, fans, etc) and safety kits, a health library, wellness education programs, social activities, and more. Additionally, we partner with The Center at Kronkosky Place in Boerne, Texas to implement Meals on Wheels-Kendall County in our part of the county.  Through this partnership, we help with delivering over 80 meals each day in and around Comfort, as well as we serve hot meals daily at our center (congregate meals).  Meals are also given out on emergency days i.e., ice, snow, electric outage, and floods.

We continue to grow and increase our programs, services, and activities for aging adults in our community.  We have many caring individuals volunteering with our many activities and programs and serving on our Foundation Board of Directors, all of whom are very dedicated to helping our area seniors in so many ways!
